Causes of shoulder pain

Shoulder pain can range from mild aches and pains to severe bone-on-bone anguish.

Shoulder pain can be caused by a variety of things. You might have been in a car accident, pulled a muscle, or have arthritis.

Whatever your level of discomfort, here are some common causes of shoulder pain for which you can seek treatment in Hamlin, Hawley and White Mills, PA, and the neighboring areas of Lake Ariel and Honesdale:

Rotator cuff injuries

Shoulder soreness, arm weakness, difficulties reaching behind the back, and sleeping problems are all symptoms of rotator cuff injury.

You might be wondering, “Will a rotator cuff injury heal on its own?” Physical therapy can often help to relieve discomfort from rotator cuff injuries and improve strength without the need for surgery. However, if surgery is required, physical therapy will be an important part of the recovery process to relieve rotator cuff pain.

Frozen shoulder

Are you experiencing a painful loss of motion and a tightness of the shoulder joint? You might have a condition known as “frozen shoulder”, causing restriction in movement. This syndrome can occur if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a long time or if you have been bedridden.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is inflammation in the shoulder joint. When tendons become inflamed over time, tendinitis will cause swelling and severe impingement when you raise your arm.

Poor posture contributes to tendinitis because it disrupts the equilibrium of your shoulders and causes tension and weakness.

Arthritis

The two most frequent kinds of arthritis that affect the shoulder are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Both result in shoulder muscle weakness, making it difficult to execute daily tasks.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to target the membranes that surround the shoulder joint. Discomfort and inflammation are symptoms of this illness.

Impingement

Impingement occurs when you elevate your arm upward to a 90-degree angle or higher and experience pain.

When the cartilage in the shoulder joint breaks down sufficiently, osteoarthritis occurs. This is mainly due to old age or excessive use. Our physical therapy clinic in Hawley, White Mills, and Lake Ariel, PA, and the neighboring areas of Lake Ariel and Honesdale can help you with both of these problems!

After suffering with a painful shoulder injury for 3 years, I decided to give Elm Tree a call, after seeing their FB ad. I am glad I did. The therapists were very knowledgeable, and were effective at diagnosing and treating my pain. I now have no pain and full functionality. They are an amazing group of therapists, and I would highly recommend them.

Top notch in every way. I worked with Frank (mostly – Riley was great too!) who was engaged, thorough and always making the exercises interesting and fun. I also felt that the manual pressure point massage was a big factor..and something I could not have done on my own (like exercises). I’d left another pt place for other reasons – they did not do the massage that really helped – so big difference there. I reached my goals of greater movement and almost completely reduced impingement in my shoulder – all normal activities have resumed all limitations no longer problems. Thanks to all for proving that first “surgery-happy” doc I saw, totally wrong in stating that at my age (69) pt would not work and surgery was the only thing that would do it. So glad I got a second opinion and found Elm Tree!
